Q: Why buy paintings unstretched?

A: It saves you a ton of money!

Very large paintings can be literally hundreds of dollars to ship--but only if they're pre-stretched. Here at The Brazen Eye, we ship your painting rolled so that you can stretch-it-yourself (or have it done) the day you receive it. That's what makes our huge paintings affordable.

Q: Is stretching a painting difficult?

A: Nope. It's easy-peasy (and inexpensive).

Really, it isn't difficult to do yourself. Take a look at our easy-to-follow instructions by clicking on one of the links at the bottom of this page.

Q: How much does stretching cost?

A: Between $10 and $600! Let us explain:

If you do it yourself with lumber you buy at the home improvement store: $10-$30.
If you do it yourself with pre-made stretcher bars: $20-50.
If you have it done at a frame shop: Shop around! We've found quotes from under $100 to over $600 (!!!) for a 4 1/2 by 6 foot canvas. An art student or a salesperson at an art supply store might be willing to do the job for you for much less.

Q: What's the difference between stretching and framing?

A: One is structural, while the other is decorative.

Stretching is when a canvas is stretched and stapled to a non-decorative support (which is usually rectangular and made of wood); the support is never visible.

Framing is when a decorative frame is added to the outside of the painting; a frame is always visible.

Q: I have no idea how to stretch a painting! Can you help?

A: Sure thing! We offer easy stretching instructions below.

(We're also available by phone or email, too, just in case you need extra help--though fewer than 1 in 150 of our collectors ever ask for help. Stretching a painting yourself really is easy-peasy! :-) )
