Are all of your paintings originals?

Yes, all of our paintings are hand-painted. Some are recreations of our own past works--but those are always hand-painted originals, too, and we always note them as such. We do not sell prints of any kind.

Are oil paintings better than acrylic paintings?

No. In fact, many savvy collectors prefer acrylics these days. Oil paint never truly dries and is fragile and prone to cracking, fading, and chipping. Modern acrylic paint can look just like oil paint--without any of oil's drawbacks. Cured acrylic paint is more elastic than oil, which makes chipping or cracking a stretched painting unlikely. Acrylic paints generally have superior lightfastness, too, so they can be displayed in more areas of the home and look brighter longer. Finally, an acrylic painting is easier to clean than oil paintings. Often, they can simply be wiped with a damp cloth!

What is an "acryl oil" painting?

Something we use a lot, acryl oil is an oil painting technique without the disadvantages of oil paints. Virtually indistinguishable from a traditional oil, an acryl oil uses acrylic paint to mimic oil. These days, acrylic paintings hang everywhere from the Louvre to the humble sidewalk cafe. For the collector, an acryl oil is easier to clean and care for, less prone to incidental damage, and far more lightfast. It's better for the environment, too. Quite simply, an acryl oil painting is superior to a traditional oil painting.

What are the advantages of buying an unstretched painting?

Unstretched paintings are safer to transport and cost less than stretched paintings. Most of The Brazen Eye's paintings are shipped rolled and unstretched. This method is much safer for these large paintings and results in substantial savings for you. Very large, pre-stretched paintings can be hundreds of dollars to ship. When you receive one of these huge paintings, you can either take it to a frame shop to have it stretched or you can do it yourself, which is easy and inexpensive--between $10 and $35, usually. Click on "Stretching Instructions" above for more information. Lots of people do this successfully, and we'll be here to answer questions if you need us. If you do take your painting to a frame shop, call around first--we've found quotes from under $100 to over $600 (!!!) for a 6' x 4'. Either way you go, it's still an amazing bargain for a truly large single canvas. They're rarely found outside of a gallery (and inside a gallery enormous paintings like this have enormous gallery prices). Were most of our very large pieces placed in a gallery, we estimate their price at $3500 or more.

What is the difference between framing and stretching?

Stretching is when you literally stretch a canvas and staple it to a wooden support. That support is hidden and can only be seen from the back side. A frame, on the other hand, is meant to be seen. Ornate or minimalist, large or small, it adds to the look of the finished painting. But you don't have to frame it! You can wrap the painting around the sides of the support during stretching and staple it on the back. This is called a "gallery wrap" finish. It is a sleek, contemporary look, and it makes a frame unnecessary. However, you can always add a frame to your painting, too.

Do all of your paintings come rolled and ready for stretching or are some of them pre-stretched?

From time to time, we do offer pre-stretched, ready-to-hang canvases. If the piece you're interested is pre-stretched, it will say so right below its main picture.

What are the dimensions of this painting?

The dimensions of each painting are listed beneath its main picture. The measurements and photos of an unstretched canvas reflect the entire canvas, some of which will be wrapped around the sides during stretching, depending upon how deep your chosen stretcher bars are. Thus, your stretched painting will be 2 to 4 inches smaller than the listed dimensions.

I'd like to see more. Can I visit your studio?

At this time, we do not offer studio tours.

What about local pick up?

We do offer local pick ups. Please allow up to two weeks for a local pick up to be scheduled.

Do you do custom paintings, and if so...well, how much?

Yes, we do custom work all the time. As for cost, we'll...the answer is, "It depends." But rest assured that we want to be fair to you as well as to ourselves. Let us know what you need, and we'll quote you a price we think you'll be happy with.

Do you combine shipping on multiple purchases?

Sorry, for safety, our paintings must be shipped separately, and so shipping cannot be combined.

Can you recommended a frame shop in my area?

Not at this time. We are working on compiling a list of recommended frame shops around the US and Canada. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is on its own. ;-)

I own a frame shop and would love to be listed on your website. How do I go about that?

Just zip us an email with an estimate on stretching an acrylic 4 1/2' x 6' gallery wrapped cotton canvas on 1 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars. If your price is in the bottom 50% of estimates we receive, we'll be happy to list you on a new page we're compiling and include a reference to the list in all of our shipments--completely for free!

I love this one painting of yours--but I'd like it done in a different color (or size). Can you do that for me?

Probably. Please see our answer about custom work, above.

Can you ship to my country?

It depends upon the size of your paintings and upon where you live. If you live abroad, please contact us for a shipping quote. We ship internationally all the time, but we can't ship these large paintings to all countries. We do ship to Canada, Europe, and Japan.

How much does it cost to stretch a painting this size?

If you do-it-yourself (which is easy-peasy!), it costs from $10 to $35. If you have someone else do it, it can cost from under $100 to over $600, so shop around!

I missed out on one of your paintings! Can you paint another?

Maybe. Check your painting's catalog page to if we offer a re-creation. If the page is gone, we can't re-create your painting.

What forms of payment do you accept?

For purchases made at TheBrazenEye.com, we accept all of the following:

    * major credit cards through Google Checkout
    * major credit cards through PayPal
    * money orders from 7-11, WalMart, or the US Postal Service

What if I don't like my painting after I receive it?

We want you to be happy, and we offer the following Satisfaction Guarantee: If you don't like your painting for any reason, you can return it within 7 days of delivery for a full refund of your purchase price (not including shipping/handling) issued in store credit. Store credit must be used within one year of date of the original painting's purchase.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Absolutely! Art makes a wonderful gift. We'll deliver a gift certificate to your recipient quickly (rush delivery is available), and we'll even gift wrap it for you, if you'd like. Just ask!

Are there any special things I need to do to protect the painting?

Acrylic paintings are very durable, and you shouldn't have any trouble. Before you display it, though, there are a few things you should be mindful of. First, you need to let the painting warm up to at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit/15 degrees Celsius before you unpack it; otherwise, the paint could chip or crack. Second, you shouldn't fold it, as hard creases (like an origami crease) won't come out. Third, be aware that one acrylic surface can adhere to another acrylic surface if left in contact for a period of time. Finally, you probably shouldn't display any painting in direct sunlight--though bright, indirect sunlight is fine. That's about it. Enjoy!
